Single-atom transistor is “perfect”
(February 20, 2012) In a remarkable feat of micro-engineering,
UNSW physicists have created a working transistor consisting of a single atom
placed precisely in a silicon crystal.
The tiny electronic device,
described today in a paper published in the journal Nature Nanotechnology, uses
as its active component an individual phosphorus atom patterned between
atomic-scale electrodes and electrostatic control gates.
This unprecedented atomic
accuracy may yield the elementary building block for a future quantum computer
with unparalleled computational efficiency.
Until now, single-atom
transistors have been realised only by chance, where researchers either have
had to search through many devices or tune multi-atom devices to isolate one
that works.
“But this device is perfect”,
says Professor Michelle Simmons, group leader and director of the ARC Centre
for Quantum Computation and Communication at UNSW. “This is the first time
anyone has shown control of a single atom in a substrate with this level of
precise accuracy.”
The microscopic device even has
tiny visible markers etched onto its surface so researchers can connect metal
contacts and apply a voltage, says research fellow and lead author Dr Martin
Fuechsle from UNSW.
“Our group has proved that it is
really possible to position one phosphorus atom in a silicon environment -
exactly as we need it - with near-atomic precision, and at the same time
register gates,” he says.

Tekne, bu tarihten sonra 10 yıl daha yarışlara katılarak birincilikler kazandı. Robotic Dinosaurs On the Way for Next-Gen Paleontology with 3-D Printing
(February 21, 2012) Researchers
at Drexel University are bringing the latest technological advancements in 3-D
printing to the study of ancient life. Using scale models of real fossils, for
the first time, they will be able to test hypotheses about how dinosaurs and
other prehistoric animals moved and lived in their environments.
“Technology in paleontology
hasn't changed in about 150 years,” said Drexel paleontologist Dr. Kenneth
Lacovara, an associate professor in the College of Arts and Sciences. “We use
shovels and pickaxes and burlap and plaster. It hasn't changed -- until right
now.”
3-D PRINTING TECHNOLOGY IN
PALEONTOLOGY
Lacovara has begun creating 3-D
scans of giant dinosaur bones and other fossils in his lab. The 3-D scan puts a
virtual image in a digital workspace that researchers can manipulate and
analyze. To bring these scans to life, Lacovara is also teaming up with
mechanical engineer Dr. James Tangorra, an assistant professor in Drexel’s
College of Engineering, to use 3-D printing technology to create and test scale
models of fossil bones.

Engineers Develop Cement With 97 Percent Smaller Carbon Dioxide and Energy Footprint
(February 20, 2012) Drexel University engineers have found a way
to improve upon ordinary Portland cement (OPC), the glue that’s bonded much of
the world’s construction since the late 1800s. In research recently published
in Cement and Concrete Composites the group served up a recipe for cement that
is more energy efficient and cost effective to produce than masonry’s most
prevalent bonding compound.
Drexel’s “green” variety is a
form of alkali-activated cement that utilizes an industrial byproduct, called
slag, and a common mineral, limestone, and does not require heating to
produce. According to Dr. Michel W.
Barsoum, A.W. Grosvenor professor in Drexel’s Department of Materials Science and
Engineering, this alternative production method and the ubiquity of the mix
ingredients, lessens the cost of materials for Drexel’s cement by about 40
percent versus Portland cement and reduces energy consumption and carbon
dioxide production by 97 percent.
