Scripps Research Institute Team Wrests Partial Control of a Memory
Scripps Research Institute Team Wrests Partial Control of a Memory
(March 22, 2012) The work advances understanding of how memories form and offers new insight into disorders such as schizophrenia and post traumatic stress disorder
Scripps Research Institute scientists and their colleagues have successfully harnessed neurons in mouse brains, allowing them to at least partially control a specific memory. Though just an initial step, the researchers hope such work will eventually lead to better understanding of how memories form in the brain, and possibly even to ways to weaken harmful thoughts for those with conditions such as schizophrenia and post traumatic stress disorder.
The results are reported in the March 23, 2012 issue of the journal Science.
“The question we’re ultimately interested in
is: How does the activity of the brain represent the world?” said Scripps
Research neuroscientist Mark Mayford, who led the new study. “Understanding all
this will help us understand what goes wrong in situations where you have
inappropriate perceptions. It can also tell us where the brain changes with
learning.”

Researchers have known for decades that stimulating various
regions of the brain can trigger behaviors and even memories. But understanding
the way these brain functions develop and occur normally—effectively how we
become who we are—has been a much more complex goal.

Invisibility of Magnetic Fields Made Reality
(March 23, 2012) UAB researchers, in collaboration with an experimental group from the Academy of Sciences of Slovakia, have created a cylinder which hides contents and makes them invisible to magnetic fields. The device was built using superconductor and ferromagnetic materials available on the market. The invention was published this week in the journal Science.
The cylinder is built using high temperature superconductor material, easily refrigerated with liquid nitrogen and covered in a layer of iron, nickel and chrome. This simple and accessible formula has been used to create a true invisibility cloak.

Electricity from trees
(March 23, 2012) Plants have long been known as the lungs of the earth, but a new finding has found they may also play a role in electrifying the atmosphere.
Scientists have long-suspected an association between trees and electricity but researchers from Queensland University of Technology (QUT) think they may have finally discovered the link.
Dr Rohan Jayaratne and Dr Xuan Ling from QUT's International Laboratory for Air Quality and Health (ILAQH), led by Professor Lidia Morawska, ran experiments in six locations around Brisbane, including the Brisbane Forest Park, Daisy Hill and Mt Coot-tha.
They found the positive and negative ion concentrations in the air were twice as high in heavily wooded areas than in open grassy areas, such as parks.
Man-made noise disrupts the growth of plants and trees
İNSAN YAPIMI GÜRÜLTÜ AĞAÇLARIN VE BİTKİLERİN BÜYÜMESİNİ AKSATIYOR
Man-made noise disrupts the growth of plants and trees
It alters birdsong and can make it difficult for some predators to hunt, and now it seems that man-made noise also affects plants.
A US team found that industrial noise disrupted the behaviour of animals that pollinate plants and disperse seeds.
This, they suggest, could be slowly transforming our landscape, especially by changing the dispersal of slow-growing trees.
The study is published in the Royal Society Proceedings B.

How the world of 1950 looked in 1925: infographic
(March 14, 2012) Airships above you, cars below ground; clean pedestrianised streets, beautiful elegant high-rise living… how exotic the far-off year of 1950 must have seemed to readers of Popular Science Monthly in 1925, when the infographic below was published. Rediscovered by the wonderful Retronaut (Slogan: "the past is a foreign country. This is your passport") it probably says more about 1925 than it does about 1950.
