SELF-DRIVING CAR IN CADILLAC’S FUTURE

‘Super cruise’ technology could be ready by mid-decade

(April 21, 2012)  Cadillac is road testing a semi-autonomous technology it calls “Super Cruise” that is capable of fully automatic steering, braking and lane-centering in highway driving under certain optimal conditions. The system could be ready for production vehicles by mid-decade.

Super Cruise is designed to ease the driver’s workload on the freeway, in both bumper-to-bumper traffic and on long road trips by relying on a fusion of radar, ultrasonic sensors, cameras and GPS map data.

“Super Cruise has the potential to improve driver performance and enjoyment,” said Don Butler, vice president of Cadillac marketing. “Our goal with advanced technologies, like this and our CUE system, is to lead in delivering an intuitive user experience.”

CHINA ‘CAN STILL LEAD’ IN GREEN CARS

(April 21, 2012)  Despite the lackluster sales of electric vehicles in China, the nation may still become a global leader in the electric vehicle industry if policymakers and manufacturers shift their focus from battery-electric vehicles toward a mid-term perspective concentrating on plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, said the global management consulting firm McKinsey & Co.

The US company's prediction came in its report Recharging China's Electric Vehicle Aspirations released on Friday, which was based on interviews with more than 30 policymakers, industry leaders and experts.

EIGHT PRODUCTS THE FACEBOOK GENERATION WILL NOT BUY

(April 21, 2012)  Consumer tastes are changing at a greater rate than ever before. Not surprisingly, the purchasing habits of the youngest generation present the most dramatic shifts — a reflection of what they find important. 24/7 Wall St. has identified eight popular products that the “Facebook generation” is not buying.

Generation Y, generally defined as those born between 1980 and 1999, have lost interest in many of the services and products their parents found important. For example, younger Americans are less interested in cars. In 1998, 64.4% of potential drivers 19-years old and younger had drivers licenses. By 2008, that rate had dropped to 46.3%, according to the Federal Highway Administration.

(April 20, 2012)  BYD announced the QIN concept vehicle, an hybrid electric car, more responsive than F3DM, capable ot going from 0 - 100 Km/h in 6.9 seconds (F3DM did it in 10.5 seconds). It will be also more efficient on the electric energy consumption, as QIN will do 50 Km using only 10kWh. For comparison, F3DM did 60Km using 60Kwh. There is no date yet as of when this vastly improved hybrid car will go for sale, but the suggested price will be about U$S 30.000.

CHINESE BATTERY-MAKER BYD “COULD BE WORLD’S BIGGEST AUTOMAKER”

(April 20, 2012)  Berkshire Hathaway's David Sokol with BYD's Wang Chuanfu in Detroit (Reuters)Buffett on BoardBYD, the Chinese battery maker-turned-automaker that stunned the world with the first mass-market electric plug-in car late last year, remains something of a wild card. The car, the F3DM, goes 62 miles on a single charge -- farther than other electric vehicles -- and sells for around $22,000, less than the plug-in Prius and much-hyped Chevy Volt are expected to cost when they come out in late 2010. But a number of questions remain, like when the car will come to the US (if at all), and how safe are its batteries.

THE THIRD INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

The digitisation of manufacturing will transform the way goods are made—and change the politics of jobs too.

THE first industrial revolution began in Britain in the late 18th century, with the mechanisation of the textile industry. Tasks previously done laboriously by hand in hundreds of weavers’ cottages were brought together in a single cotton mill, and the factory was born. The second industrial revolution came in the early 20th century, when Henry Ford mastered the moving assembly line and ushered in the age of mass production. The first two industrial revolutions made people richer and more urban. Now a third revolution is under way. Manufacturing is going digital. As this week’s special report argues, this could change not just business, but much else besides.

VACUUM TUBES FOR SUPER-FAST PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Round the world in just six hours: Vacuum tubes could be used for super-fast public transport

(April 19, 2012)  Imagine hopping on the Tube in London on your way to work in the morning - and getting off near your office in New York City just three-quarters of an hour later.

If the designers of one revolutionary idea for the public transport of the future are right, that's just what we could be doing one day.

Evacuated Tube Transport (ETT) is an airless, frictionless form of transport which, its designers say, is safer, cheaper and quieter than trains or aeroplanes.

Using airless vacuum tubes, six-seat, 183kg passenger pods are designed to reach phenomenal speeds of up to 4,000mph (6,500kph), using far less energy than conventional transport methods.

THE FORD FOCUS ELECTRIC

(April 18, 2012)  The automaker says soon all its cars will be compatible with gas, electric, and hybrid drivetrains.

Ford is preparing for an era when choosing whether a new car is powered by gas, electricity, or both is as simple as choosing its color is.

All future models from the automaker will be designed so that they can be produced with gas, electric, or hybrid drivetrains, a strategy embodied by the Ford Focus Electric, made available for the first press test drives last week. While GM and Nissan designed their first all-electric mass production cars from scratch, Ford is essentially using a 2010 design with the gas guts switched for electric ones.

TINTED WINDOWS THAT GENERATE ELECTRICITY

A German company borrows the materials and manufacturing process of OLED displays to make a new kind of solar panel.

(April 18, 2012)  A startup in Germany has developed a new kind of solar panel made of small, organic molecules deposited on polyester films. The technology is similar to what's used for OLED displays for phones and flat-screen TVs. The panels are flexible, and far lighter than conventional solar panels, yet in some locations—particularly where it's hot or cloudy—they can generate just as much electricity as a conventional solar panel.

IMPROVED LOBLOLLY PINES

Improved Loblolly Pines Better for the Environment, Study Finds

(April 18, 2012)  More than 50 years of genetics work to increase loblolly pine production in the Southeast has improved the trees’ ability to act as carbon sinks that mitigate climate change, according to a new study by North Carolina State University researchers.

“We’ve been working to create trees that grow faster and produce more wood, and what this research shows is that at the same time we’re enhancing environmental quality by scrubbing as much carbon out of the atmosphere as we possibly can,” says Dr. John King, an NC State forest ecologist and co-author of a paper published this month in the journal Forest Science.

SIM-DRIVE ELECTRIC VEHICLE

SIM-Drive Unveils EV Prototype With Long Drive Range

(April 15, 2012)  SIM-Drive Corp, a Japan-based firm that develops electric vehicles (EVs), announced that it has completed the "SIM-WIL," the second vehicle for its advanced development project.

The company has been engaged in the development since January 2011. The project is for prototyping vehicles to be commercialized in about 2014 and participated by 34 companies/organizations that are planning to launch EV businesses in the future.

The amount of battery mounted on the SIM-WIL is larger than that of the "SIM-LEI," the first vehicle for the advanced development project, and the EV has a drive range of 351km (approx 218 miles) per charge. In its B-segment body (4,150 (L) x 1,715 (W) x 1,550mm (H)), an in-car space equivalent to that of an E-segment vehicle was realized, SIM-Drive said. Also, it can accelerate from zero to 100km/h (approx 62.1mph) in 5.4 seconds, which is equivalent to the acceleration performance of a middle-grade sports car.

MARS VIKING ROBOTS 'FOUND LIFE'

(April 13, 2012)  Mathematical analysis adds to growing body of work questioning the negative results of a life-detection experiment 36 years ago.

New analysis of 36-year-old data, resuscitated from printouts, shows NASA found life on Mars, an international team of mathematicians and scientists conclude in a paper published this week.

Further, NASA doesn't need a human expedition to Mars to nail down the claim, neuropharmacologist and biologist Joseph Miller, with the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine, told Discovery News.

"The ultimate proof is to take a video of a Martian bacteria. They should send a microscope -- watch the bacteria move," Miller said.

THE PRINGLES PACKAGE SUCKS

This Chip Can Blooms Into A Bowl

(April 11, 2012)  Young designer Dohyuk Kwon encountered the same problem we all have before: He was enjoying a package of Pringles potato crisps until, suddenly, he found the chip level had sunk to a critical expletive-laden stage just below the reach of his fingers. “So I sketched a more convenient package of chips,” he tells Co.Design.

His concept is called Bloom Chips, and it won a Red Dot Award for its obvious brilliance: Bloom Chips is a wrinkled cylinder that unfurls to create its own bowl. “Its mechanism is more complex than it looks,” says Kwon. “Simply speaking, it’s like a blooming flower.” The idea is so instantly impressive that it’s impossible to imagine why no one at Procter & Gamble thought of it first.

Song dynasty ceramic sells for $26.7M in Hong Kong

HONG KONG (AP) — A 900-year-old dish has smashed the record for Chinese Song dynasty ceramics sold at auction, fetching $26.7 million.

Sotheby's said Wednesday that eight bidders competed for the Ruyao washer over 15 minutes before it sold for 208 million Hong Kong dollars ($26.7 million). That was triple the pre-sale estimate.
Sotheby's said the price surpassed the previous record set in April 2008 for Song dynasty ceramics, when a vase sold by the auction house went for HK$67.5 million.
The auction house said the flower-shaped bowl was from a private Japanese collection and was "arguably the most desirable piece of Ru official ware remaining in private hands."
The auction result underscores Hong Kong's position as the world's third largest auction hub, driven by soaring demand from newly wealthy Chinese collectors.

NEW “SOLAR JACKET” LETS KINDLE LAST FOREVER

(April 3, 2012)  New 'solar jacket' lets Kindle last forever (well, for as long as the sun keeps shining)

* Built-in solar panel charges Kindle
* Guaranteed to offer at least three months battery life without a power socket
* Charges three days' worth of reading per hour
* Backup battery offers three weeks' reading
* Solar gizmo also has LED light

A new solar Kindle case lets readers 'top up' their gadget simply by leaving it in the sun - and could mean holidaymakers no longer have to bother bringing a cable.
The case has a built-in solar panel and battery - and the battery is guaranteed to provide three months of reading time in 'normal' sunlight, without dipping into the Kindle's own power.
The gadget goes on sale this week, priced at $80/£50.

Once the gadget's topped up, the SolarKindle diverts power to a backup battery.
Eight hours will fully charge the backup , which offers roughly three weeks' use. The battery also powers an LED light, which can run for 50 hours

SELF-SCULPTING SAND

(April 3, 2012)  New algorithms could enable heaps of ‘smart sand’ that can assume any shape, allowing spontaneous formation of new tools or duplication of broken mechanical parts.

Imagine that you have a big box of sand in which you bury a tiny model of a footstool. A few seconds later, you reach into the box and pull out a full-size footstool: The sand has assembled itself into a large-scale replica of the model.

That may sound like a scene from a Harry Potter novel, but it’s the vision animating a research project at the Distributed Robotics Laboratory (DRL) at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. At the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation in May — the world’s premier robotics conference — DRL researchers will present a paper describing algorithms that could enable such “smart sand.” They also describe experiments in which they tested the algorithms on somewhat larger particles — cubes about 10 millimeters to an edge, with rudimentary microprocessors inside and very unusual magnets on four of their sides.

HUMAN USED FIRE 1 MILLION YEARS AGO, scientists say.

(April 3, 2012)  Ash and charred bone, the earliest known evidence of controlled use of fire, reveal that human ancestors may have used fire a million years ago, a discovery that researchers say will shed light on this major turning point in human evolution.

Scientists analyzed material from Wonderwerk Cave in South Africa, a massive cavern located near the edge of the Kalahari Desert. Previous excavations there had uncovered an extensive record of human occupation.

Microscopic analysis revealed clear evidence of burning, such as plant ash and charred bone fragments. These materials were apparently burned in the cave, as opposed to being carried in there by wind or water, and were found alongside stone tools in a layer dating back about 1 million years. Surface fracturing of ironstone, the kind expected from fires, was also seen.
